Best Drought Tolerant Crop for Southern California

With water conservation becoming increasingly more important with each passing year, Cycads are the word for Southern California. Cycads are ancient plants, prehistoric living dinosaurs of the plant world and described by many enthusiasts as stunning, even mesmerizing. With over 280 species in 11 genera, Cycads can provide a unique look in any landscape setting or design.

The demand for Cycads is on the rise. Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties provide the perfect climate for these amazing plants. In a xerophytic planting, Cycads steal the show. Their beautiful full foliage, leaf variations, interesting colors and spectacular cones set them apart from the botanical norm. They easily transition from desert to tropical landscapes. Cycads can be maintained with very little water and bring an exotic touch to a xerophytic climate.
Seed demand for these rare plants is very high worldwide. Cone production with viable seed can also be very profitable and is very easy to produce from mature plants. Cones shown in the photos below are that of Enc longifolius and Enc aemulans.
Commercial Cycad production has enormous financial potential. They require little maintenance and use only a small fraction of the water and fertilizer needed for most other crops. As a replacement for marginal agricultural crops,Cycads have few if any peers.

One thing is for sure, Cycads are coming to a garden near you.
